Roof Leak in Early Winter? What to Do

As the first cold weeks arrive, a small roof problem can become a leak fast. Here are the signs to look for, how a repair differs from a replacement, and what to do when a roof cannot wait.

Why the First Cold Weeks Matter

By early November in western Kentucky and northern Tennessee, the leaves are mostly down, the nights are cold and the wind and rain are showing up more often. A roof that came through summer with a lifted shingle tab, loose flashing or a seam that has started to open is now facing the stretch of the year that asks the most of it. Early November is a good moment to take stock, because there is still time to act before a small problem turns into water inside the house.

If you read our earlier guides on the fall roof check before winter and on getting your roof ready for winter weather, this post is the next step. It is about what to do when you have looked and found something, or when a leak shows up on a cold night.

Signs a Roof Is Already Letting Water In

Water rarely announces itself with a dramatic drip. More often it leaves quiet clues, and the cold months make them easier to miss because the heat is on and the windows stay shut.

Inside the house

  • Stains or discoloration on ceilings, especially on the top floor or near exterior walls.
  • Damp spots or a musty smell in the attic after a rain.
  • Daylight showing through the roof boards from the attic side.

From the ground

  • Shingles that are missing, curled, or sitting at a different angle than the ones around them.
  • Bare or dark patches where the shingle surface looks worn compared with the rest of the roof.
  • Flashing around a chimney or vent that looks bent, lifted or out of place.
  • Leaves or debris packed into valleys and gutters, where water is supposed to move off the roof freely.

You do not need to climb onto the roof, and we would rather you did not. Everything above can be noticed from the ground or from inside.

What Cold Weather Does to a Weak Spot

Wind finds any shingle tab that is already loose. Rain keeps testing every seam and every piece of flashing. Wind and hail can also lift shingle tabs and strip granules without leaving an obvious hole, so a roof can look fine from the street and still have spots where water can get in. That is why a small issue that would have been a quick repair in October can turn into water damage inside the house later in the winter. If a recent storm is what you are wondering about, read whether storm damage to a roof can be repaired.

Repair or Replacement

Not every problem means a new roof. A leak, a few missing shingles, or flashing pulled loose around a chimney or vent can often be handled as a repair by the same crew that installs full roofs. A repair fixes the specific spot that is failing and lets the rest of a sound roof keep doing its job.

When the trouble is spread across the whole roof, a full replacement is usually the more sensible path, because fixing one area at a time would no longer make sense. In that case the old roofing material comes off, the deck gets checked, new underlayment goes down, and the new shingles are laid course by course to the GAF standard. Every roof we install is built up the same way, in three layers: the wood deck, the underlayment, and the shingle course on top. For the full walk through, see what happens during a roof replacement.

What to Do When a Leak Cannot Wait

Winter problems do not keep business hours, and neither do we. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for roofs that cannot wait until Monday. If water is coming in or part of your roof is exposed, call (270) 703-9177 and tell us what you are seeing and when it started. You do not need to know the cause or use the right terms. We will talk it through with you and lay out your options.
