Why Late Fall Matters for Your Roof
By mid October in western Kentucky and northern Tennessee, the weather is turning. Nights get colder, leaves come down, and wind and rain show up more often. A roof that came through summer with a small weak spot, a lifted shingle tab, loose flashing or a seam that has started to open, is about to be tested by the months that ask the most of it.
This is the time to get ready, not to wait and see. A little preparation now is far easier than dealing with water coming into the house during the first cold snap.
Getting Ready: What to Look At
You do not need to climb onto your roof, and we would rather you did not. Most of what matters can be seen from the ground or from inside the house.
Gutters and valleys
Falling leaves collect in gutters and in the valleys where two roof slopes meet. Debris there holds moisture against the roof and keeps water from moving off freely. Clearing gutters from the ground or a safe ladder position is a simple first step, and a valley that stays packed with leaves is worth mentioning to a roofer.
Shingles and flashing
- Shingles that are missing, curled, or sitting at a different angle than the ones around them.
- Bare or dark patches where the shingle surface looks worn compared with the rest of the roof.
- Flashing around a chimney or vent that looks bent, lifted or out of place.
Inside the house
- Stains or discoloration on ceilings, especially on the top floor or near exterior walls.
- Damp spots or a musty smell in the attic after a rain.
- Daylight showing through the roof boards from the attic side.
If you want a fuller checklist, our post on the fall roof check before winter goes through each of these signs in more detail.
What Wind, Rain and Cold Do to a Weak Spot
Wind finds any shingle tab that is already loose. Rain keeps testing every seam and every piece of flashing. Wind and hail can also lift shingle tabs and strip granules without leaving an obvious hole, so a roof can look fine from the street and still have spots where water can get in. Because of that, a small issue that would have been a quick repair in October can turn into water damage inside the house later in the winter.
Repair or Replacement Before Winter
Not every problem means a new roof. A leak, a few missing shingles, or flashing pulled loose around a chimney or vent can often be handled as a repair by the same crew that installs full roofs. The goal of a repair is to fix the specific spot that is failing and keep the rest of a sound roof doing its job.
When problems are spread across the whole roof, a full replacement is usually the more sensible path. The old roofing material comes off, the deck gets checked, new underlayment goes down, and the new shingles are laid course by course to the GAF standard. If you want to know what that looks like from start to finish, read what happens during a roof replacement. For a bigger project, financing is available through Enhancify for qualified roofing projects, and the link is on our roofing page.
When a Problem Cannot Wait
Some roof problems show up at the worst time, like a limb coming down in a storm or a leak that appears in the middle of the night. Stanley Custom Builders is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for roofs that cannot wait until Monday. Call (270) 703-9177 and tell us what is happening, and we will talk it through with you.
